Sugar the glass. It’s just classy… and Jennifer likes it.

Jennifer’s Drink (made first, pictured)
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce countreau
1 kiwi (the fruit)
dash of maraschino liqueur
Cut the kiwi into thin chunks and add that to the shaker with ice. Combine the booze in the shaker, and shake vigorously. Pour into a chilled / sugared glass. Garnish with a piece of kiwi.
Matthew’s Drink (not pictured)
2 ounces gin
1 ounce lemon
1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur
2 kiwis
Cut the kiwi into thin chunks and add the lemon. Muddle this a bit to slightly juice the kiwi. Combine the booze in the shaker, with ice, and shake vigorously. Pour into a chilled glass. Garnish with a piece of kiwi.
Notes: So… my thought was to make something really mild and slightly sweet for Jennifer. After tasting it, I realized I needed to have way more kiwi. It was just a bit too mild. It did have this really cool green color and some seeds on the bottom. I think for next time… cut the cherry … and add a second kiwi. My drink… was essentially an Aviation with kiwi. I tried a couple drinks recently where I dropped whole fruit into pieces and that added a really cool amount of pulp / texture to the drink. My drink was pretty good. This drink made me realize I need a fine seive… I liked the fruit texture, but there were a few chunks.
Learning is fun!

Pro Tip

Made a drink… thanks to the suggestion of my friend Nate:

  • tequila (one or two shots). Smoother tequila is better than… not.
  • splash of cointreau (I guess you could use triple sec… but come on…)
  • lime juice (to taste)

Serve this over rocks.

Drink tip:

Want to slightly change the color of the drink you are making… especially if it is clear?

Pour some cranberry juice (or other colored beverage) SLOWLY down the side of the glass.

Make sure you pour it down the side of the glass, not into the glass. What will happen…. is the juice will pool at the bottom of the glass and add a slight layer of color to the bottom.

So yea… the drink I made was green / clear near the top and then had a red / pink color at the bottom… and only the bottom.

So that’s that. Another tasty drink.

Stuff on the Beach
2 shots of vodka
1 shot of peach schnapps
1 shot of orange juice
splash of sour mix
splash of cranberry juice
Shake the alcohol and sour mix.
Pour this mix into a chilled martini glass.
Slowly pour the orange juice on top.
Pour the cranberry juice very slowly around the sides of the glass. This will give an interesting swirl effect.

Curious Lemon Drop

So… most lemon drops are pretty sweet. This one is… curious and sweet.

Part 1

  • 3 inches of ginger root, chopped up.
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of water

Bring this mixture to a boil, then down to a simmer and wait for it to thicken. This will be about 3 minutes after the boil. Take the ginger pieces out and place the syrup into a serving container and chill.

Part 2

  • 2 ounces Ebb & Flow vodka
  • 1 1/2 ounces Meyer lemon juice, fresh squeezed
  • 1/2 ounce of the ginger syrup

Shake these with four or five ice cubes and serve strained. The slight sweetness of the vodka and spiciness of the syrup, combined with the citrus make for an interesting drink.

Glass prep: I normally fill a glass with cold water and let it chill a bit before pouring a drink in it. I also rimmed the glass with lemon.

Jennifer liked it.
